A total of 24 female researchers from the University of La Laguna star in the second season of the informative audiovisual series, Chicas con Cienci@ULL, which resumes today and will continue throughout the school year. The initiative, promoted by the University of La Laguna, has the collaboration of the Fundación Cepsa and the Directorate General of Youth at the Government of the Canary Islands.
This series, informative and educational in nature, emphasizes promoting the scientific and technological vocations among young women in the Canary Islands, with the goal of improving their school performance and increasing their interest in accessing higher education, which will help them to achieve better jobs.
For this purpose, we rely on the testimony of expert teachers from the University of La Laguna, who work in different scientific and social fields and who contribute with their example to make their professional projection seen
Using relatable language, each researcher talks for about 7 minutes about their childhood, the reasons that led them to research, and the work they have developed, concluding their speech with a motivational message addressed to young Canarian women.
Aimed at the general public, and especially at secondary school, high school, and vocational training students, the series is structured around five areas of knowledge, according to each of the participants’ research activity , focusing on science and technology; energy, biodiversity and the environment; science and society; biomedicine and health; and art and humanities.
Belén Machado, head of the Fundación Cepsa in the Canaries, has stated that this activity is part of the line of collaborations that the Foundation maintains in science education matters. “The researchers and teachers tell in first person, in a pleasant, empathetic way and with examples, their personal and professional experiences. The intention is to show young women in the Canary Islands that there are many other job options beyond the ones they may have closer to them or the ones they see every day, to increase their self-esteem and job expectations, inspiring them to pursue their professional dreams.”
Meanwhile, the coordinator of the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the University of La Laguna, Laura García, explains that “this type of initiative brings the world of research closer to society, especially to school students, showing that it is possible to access it, if you set your mind to it. At the same time, the great work done by ULL women scientists in different fields is shown.”
The first chapter of this series will be given by the sculptor and researcher from the University of La Laguna, Fátima Acosta, while the second chapter, scheduled for the 21st, will include the testimony of Gara Miranda Valladares, a computer engineer.
During the month of November, two new chapters will be shown, with the participation of the technical architect, Marta Domínguez Herrera, and the visual artist, Susana Guerra Mejías.
Furthermore, the December program will include two other testimonies. In this round, the economist, Inés Ruiz, will contribute her personal vision, while the environmentalist and civil engineer, Cintia Hernández, will bring this year's broadcasts to a close.
The screenings can be seen on the Canal de Youtube de Cienci@ULL and on the Fundación Cepsa website.
