- Organized by the Santa Cruz Basketball Club, the event combined sports activities to promote values and healthy lifestyle habits.
- Since its inception, this summer event has welcomed nearly 1,200 children.
After seven days of intense sports, leisure and fun activities at the Paco Álvarez Sports Pavilion, the 12th edition of the "Fundación Cepsa-Santa Cruz Basketball Club Minibasketball Campus" has ended successfully, with the participation of 51 children between 5 and 12 years old, a figure that this year was lower than previous editions due to the pandemic to comply with the COVID-19 prevention measures.
The summer event, which has become a regular feature of the sports calendar of the capital of Tenerife at the end of each school year, and which in its twelve editions has been attended by around 1,200 children, has allowed, despite the limitations imposed by the current health situation, to take their first steps in this sport or improve the preparation of the fifty or so primary school students enrolled.
But beyond taking part in sports, the event has had a significant social character, since it has allowed the participating children to deepen the values of collaboration and teamwork that this type of activity entails, in addition learning and practicing healthy lifestyle habits.
Training sessions in small groups, individual competitions, games and leisure activities, talks by special guests, music and complementary activities, such as swimming pool, also in small groups, have marked this edition of this Campus, which has also had the collaboration of the Sports Service of the City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
During the event, players and coaches from other clubs, some of whom started in the world of basketball precisely in this Campus, and who are now leading figures, gave different talks to approach the youngest to convey their experience and values such as effort, teamwork, perseverance and companionship.
In this regard, it is worth mentioning the celebration of a unifying talk, starring the children from Africa who, as every year, receive scholarships from the Santa Cruz Basketball Club, who combine their studies in Tenerife with their projection in the world of sports. Fallou, Pap, Edinho and Ibu, from Senegal, Mali and Congo, who also participated as volunteer coaches in this minibasketball summer campus, shared their experience during the current school year, and emphasized how they have managed to integrate and adapt. This has allowed them to pass all subjects, in addition to making good progress at the level of sports, despite having to overcome barriers such as language and living in a new country.
The closing ceremony of the "Fundación Cepsa-Santa Cruz Basketball Club Minibasketball Campus" was attended by the head of Fundación Cepsa in the Canary Islands, Belén Machado, and the Club's manager, Alberto Deniz. Once again this year, this meeting has served as a lesson for the children of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which on this occasion has become even more relevant, as it has allowed the resumption of this sporting activity with all the health guarantees, a key aspect at a time like the present.
